What goes on sale on Prime Day and when?

I know the phrasing in the title might sound a little weird but hear me out. I'm a newer Amazon Prime member and have never participated in Prime Day before. I'm looking for a new TV, a Blu-Ray player, and my favorite show on Blu-Ray. The sales I'm used to are Steam sales which is basically when everything on the site is heavily discounted.Basically what I'm asking is: How does Prime Day work?
